The Asylum Artist and Photography Studio in Wolverhampton was chosen for one specific reason: its large industrial windows. Rain was falling on the morning of the session. The combination of daylight streaming through rain-streaked glass and a subject completely at ease with the camera produced the session’s defining image before the first hour was out.

THE WINDOW — AVAILABLE DAYLIGHT ONLY
No studio flash was used for the window frames. The only light source was daylight coming through the rain-streaked glass behind her — soft, diffused, and directional in exactly the way that studio lighting spends hours trying to replicate.

THE DARK STUDIO — INCANDESCENT LIGHT ONLY
Two incandescent filament bulbs, and nothing else. No flash, no softbox, no modification of any kind. The EF85mm f/1.4 at this distance compresses depth of field to centimetres — everything outside the subject dissolves into black, and the warm amber glow of the bulbs becomes the only world in the frame. These are the frames that look like paintings.
